How to Test Email Templates and Shortcodes
In this guide, you’ll learn how to send test emails for your email templates in LeadCenter.ai. Testing templates helps you verify how your message and shortcodes (merge fields) appear to recipients before sending them to actual contacts or clients.
Step 1: Access the Email Templates Page
- From the main dashboard, go to Templates → Email Templates.
- Switch to the Table View to see your list of templates.
- Find the email template you want to test, for example, “15-Minute Webinar Event Reminder.”
- Click on the template to open it.
Step 2: Send a Test Email
Inside the template editor, you’ll see a “Send Test Email” button.
You have two ways to send a test:
Option 1: Send to Any Email Address
- Click Send Test Email.
- Enter any email address to send the test.
- Note: If you use this option, shortcodes will not populate; the placeholders will appear as-is.
Option 2: Send to a Contact (Recommended)
To properly test shortcodes and see real data (like names, event dates, or contact info) in your email:
- Click Send to Contact.
- Search for and select an existing contact that has an email address.
- If the email template is related to an event, you’ll see a dropdown list of events.
- Select an event the contact is registered for.
- If the contact is not registered for any event, you’ll see a message: “This contact is not registered for any event. Please add them to an event before sending this email to ensure event shortcodes populate correctly.”
- Once the correct contact and event are selected, click Send.
You’ll receive the email in your inbox with all shortcodes properly filled in, just as your clients would see them.
Step 3: Review the Test Email
After sending the test:
- Check your inbox to review the email layout and content.
- Confirm that all shortcodes and dynamic fields (like contact name, event date, and location) display correctly.
- Make any necessary edits to the template if something doesn’t appear as expected.
